Currently, more than 60 million people throughout the world have been displaced because of military conflicts. Instead of banning refugees based on nationality or religion, the United States should live up to the words of Emma Lazarus, which are engraved on the Statue of Liberty:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Dr. Gill believes that shutting our doors to those whose homes have been ravaged by war is un-American. Refugees are not terrorists, rather they are fleeing terror. About three-fourths of Syrian refugees are women and children. The United States has a history of helping innocent people who flee persecution, and Dr. Gill will fight to make sure this continues.
